Edmund, SC 08/11/2022 (Paul Kirby) – One man is in critical condition at Prisma Health’s Palmetto Richland after he was trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle that rolled over and went into some trees Sunday afternoon. The 911 call was received by Lexington County at approximately 5:30 p.m. bringing firefighters, medical personnel, and law enforcement to the 1400 block of Boiling Springs Road just off South Lake Drive in the Edmund community.
According to a property owner that lives right at the scene, it appeared as if the vehicle was travelling east toward South Lake Drive when the driver lost control. The vehicle, which was so mangled it was hard to identify, began to slide sideways in the road leaving a long set of skid marks. It then left the road, struck a tree pulling that out the ground, and finally hit another tree in the vehicle’s door before coming to a stop. The vehicle literally wrapped itself around that tree trapping the driver and a dog inside. The driver was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
It took some time for a large group of firefighters to free the driver from the vehicle. He was placed in a Lexington County EMS unit that transported him by ground to the landing zone at the South Congaree Equestrian Arena. There he was transferred to a medical helicopter for a short flight to the trauma center in Columbia.
According to a family member of the driver, he was close to death when he arrived at the hospital. Doctors were concerned he might not make it through the night and told the family he was, “on the fence.” After intense work by the medical team, the family member said he did show some improvement giving the doctors a reason to hope that he would survive.
According to a witness on the scene, after the man was freed from the vehicle, firefighters continued to work to free the trapped dog. That animals condition is unknown.
