One man dies in collision on Crystal Springs Drive Sunday afternoon

Edmund, SC 04/17/2023 (Paul Kirby) – One man has died following a two-vehicle collision on Crystal Springs and Flacon Drive on Sunday, April 16, 2023. The collision occurred around 1:30 p.m. and closed the Crystal Springs Drive, Falcon Drive, and the Redmond Road intersection for some time while firefighters worked to free a man that was trapped by the wreckage.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found that a person had been ejected from one of the vehicles and was pinned underneath. As soon as firefighters arrived, they went to work stabilizing the vehicle before lifting it off the man to free him. They also used the Jaws of Life to cut away a portion of the truck’s cab to help with access to one of the patients. EMS crews and a supervisor were treating several patients at this point and deciding what means of transport they would use. The road closure was further extended due to the serious nature of the crash. This prompted SC State Troopers to immediately begin an in-depth investigation into this incident.

Witnesses who lived closest to the intersection say that an older model red Chevrolet pickup was travelling west on Crystal Springs Drive toward Old Charleston Road. As it approached the intersection of Falcon Drive and Redmond Road, a newer model white 4-door sedan pulled into its path. The truck struck the sedan in the passenger side causing both vehicles to spin out of control and come to a violent stop.

State Troopers did perform a filed sobriety test on the driver of the vehicle who only had minor injuries. This doesn’t necessarily indicate that they thought that operator was under the influence. It would be prudent given the serious nature of the collision. The SCHP has not said if any charges have been filed or if any are pending.

We have been in contact with a spokesman for the SC Highway Patrol and are waiting on greater details on the progress of their investigation. Coroner Fisher has not yet released the identity of the man who was killed.
