Overturned pickup blocks key road in heavy rainstorm early Thursday

Fairview, SC - 02/18/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A pickup truck’s driver lost control of his vehicle and turned it over early Thursday morning. The collision occurred at Calks Ferry and Water Tank Roads just north of Fairview Crossroads. The collision happened about 4:30 a.m. during a heavy rainstorm.

Units from Lexington EMS, the fire service, and law enforcement officers responded to the scene of the wreck. When they arrived, the first truck officers reported that the pickup was on its side and its position would necessitate them closing all of Calks Ferry Road for a short while. Calks Ferry is a key road that runs across much of western Lexington County from US Hwy. 378 near Lake Murray to US Hwy. 178 in Fairview.

The driver of the truck was still in the cab when he made the call to Lexington County’s 911 Telecommunications Center. When firefighters arrived the reported what they described as a, “minor entrapment,” but they quickly resolved that, extricating the driver from the cab.

Once most of the emergency equipment was able to leave the scene, the road was partially reopened. It should be completely reopened by the height of the morning commute and had been removed from the SCDPS collision warning system by 6:00 a.m.

The SCHP will be in charge of investigating this collision.
