Overturned tractor trailer causes major traffic snarl on I-77 south and I-26 Wednesday night
Cayce, SC (06/10/2021 Paul Kirby) – A tractor trailer truck overturned at the I-77 south, I-26 interchange Wednesday night shutting down a portion of the interstate and snarling traffic for hours. The Cayce Department of Public Safety responded with law enforcement officers and firefighters to the call around 9:00 p.m.
First arriving officers quickly realized that this collision was significant and take some time to sort out. The truck was laying on its side and there was a small fire burning in a portion of the trailer’s mechanical equipment. Officers also noted that the truck appeared to have struck the concrete divider barrier hard when the driver lost control and debris from that was in the roadway.
SC State Troopers from Troop One, the troop that covers the Midlands, rushed to the scene, and began assisting the Cayce officers setting up a detour. Meanwhile, Cayce firefighters dealt with the mechanical fire quickly and then requested the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) contact them about the collision and its threat to the environment.
The process of getting the truck back on its wheels and towed took quite some time. During much of that period, there were detours in place and motorist simply had to follow the directions of law enforcement and find alternate routes. Officers also had to work to get the vehicles that had been just behind the wrecked truck off the ramp and clear of the interstate. This collision required a cooperative effort from several agencies working together to get the road cleared.
The cause of the collision is under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol.
