South Congaree, SC 04/11/2023 (Paul Kirby) – An older man was struck and killed by a vehicle in the Town of South Congaree Monday afternoon. The collision reportedly happened in the 800 block of Ramblin Road.
According to Police Chief Josh Shumpert, the gentleman was walking along the road, something the Chief said he did regularly. A woman in the vehicle was driving on Ramblin Road when the older man suddenly stepped into the road in front of her. Police, fire, and EMS were on the scene quickly, began treatment, and transported him to the Trauma Center in Columbia. He later succumbed to his injuries. Chief Shumpert said after the department’s investigation was completed, they have decided not to charge the woman as she committed no crime.
Friends and family have identified the man as Dr. Charles Atkins, formerly of the Chapin area. Former South Congaree Town Councilmember Bobby Porter said, "He was my neighbor for 18 yrs and a trusted friend. He will be greatly missed."
