Cayce, SC 07/25/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A pedestrian that was on the interstate was struck and killed by a vehicle at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday morning, according to the SCHP. This collision happened on I-26 between the 113 and 114 mile-marker east which is near the Airport Boulevard and I-77 interchanges.
According to Lance Corporal Nick Pye of the SCHP, a KIA sedan operated by a 23-year-old struck a pedestrian that was in the road. The pedestrian died as a result of this collision.
Later Sunday, that pedestrian was identified by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher as Andre Howell, 25, of Clinton, SC. Neither Lance Corporal Pye nor Coroner Fisher said why Howell was on the interstate without being in a vehicle.
Pye did say that the driver of the KIA was transported to a local medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries. That driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
The SCHP is investigating to try and determine how and why Howell got onto the interstate on foot. That investigation may take some time to complete.
