Gaston, SC 07/26/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A person has been trapped in a vehicle as specially trained firefighters from Lexington County’s Fire Service work to stabilize a home after a car drove through it Monday afternoon. This happened on Hwy 321 south near the Glenn Road intersection according to public safety officials.
According to reports, the small Chrysler PT Cruiser veered off the highway, hit the structure near one corner, crashed through its front room, and came out the other side with the front end sticking out into the yard. When it stopped moving, the car’s rear portion was still inside the home the small cement block home. This was al happening shortly after 1:00 p.m.
EMS personnel, firefighters, and law enforcement officers from several agencies responded. Dominion Energy was also requested to come to the scene so that the home’s electricity could be disconnected before an attempt is made to get the patient out of the car.
Lexington County has specially trained teams and equipment assigned to its fire service that can be used in the event of a building collapse such as this. Its special operations response vehicles are equipped with shoring material, wood, saws, and other power tools that might be needed to stabilize the structure and prevent it from falling on patients or the first responders as they work. In this case on Monday, the amount of damage to the structure caused by the collision showed that it is imperative that further collapse be prevented until anyone who is trapped can be rescued.
There is currently no information available on the condition of the person in the car. None of the agencies working have said if there was someone in the home and if they were injured at this juncture.
