West Columbia, SC 03/07/2022 - The President of the AMA and South Carolina Family Physician will address a large group of Midlands Physicians on May 3rd, 2022, at Stone River on Alexandria Street May in the City of West Columbia. According to these groups, South Carolina physicians who are members of the Columbia Medical Society and the Lexington Medical Association will welcome Columbia Medical Societywho will address Physician Involvement in Organized Medicine. This is a jointly sponsored event that is scheduled for Tuesday, May 3rd. It will begin with a reception at 6:00 p.m. It will be held at the Stone River Meeting Venue at 121 Alexander Road, West Columbia at the base of the beautiful Columbia Medical Societyalong the picturesque Congaree River.
A retired major general from the U.S. Air Force and dedicated family medicine specialist for more than 30 years in coastal Carolina, Dr. Harmon is the 176th president of the American Medical Association. He has been a valued member of the American Medical Association's Board of Trustees since 2013 and served as Board chair from 2017 - 2018. His distinguished record of service in his home state of South Carolina includes Board chair and president of the South Carolina Medical Association. He is also a professor at two of South Carolina's medical schools and is a member of the clinical faculty for the Tidelands Health Family Medicine residency program where he regularly instructs physicians in training.
Dr. Harmon is an adviser to the board of trustees for his local community health system and is vice president in a multispecialty physician practice. He has been recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award from his county's Chamber of Commerce, and he has served as South Carolina's secretary for the State Aeronautics Commission.
Dr. Harmon ended his decorated, 35-year career in U.S. Air Force with the rank of major general, serving the nation in the Air Force Reserve, on Active Duty, and in the Air National Guard holding responsibilities as chief physician for the National Guard Bureau. His honors include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
Founded in 1854, the Columbia Medical Society represents physicians practicing in Richland County. The Lexington Medical Association represents physicians practicing in Lexington County.
