Swansea, SC 09/15/2021 (Paul Kirby) – The Promoting Swansea, SC Facebook Group (PSSC) is in the planning phase of several community events that are intended to bring unity to that community. In the past year, the Town of Swansea has received a lot of bad press and this group of friends and neighbors are determined to not only show people what a wonderful community Swansea is but to also improve the area’s quality of life in general. They plan to do this by continuing to provide opportunities for the citizens and visitors to come together in multiple ways.
On September 25th, the group has scheduled a Community Yard Sale and Trade n Swap. Along with individuals, they are inviting area schools, churches, and civic groups to join them. Any of the organizations listed above will be provided with one 10’x10’ space at no cost. For individuals or families, spaces are renting for $5.00 each and there should be plenty of shoppers browsing and buying. A downloadable and printable copy of the booth space application is below.
The event will begin at 8:00 and wrap up at 10:00 a.m. You can find it near the Bi-Rite on West 2nd Street close to the little town park. This should be lots of fun and you’ll have an opportunity to scoop up some great values if you get there early with comfortable walking shoes on.
Next, in October, the PSSC Group will be holding their first Swansea Scarecrow Showdown and Fall Fling. This is a neat community-wide event that should be loads of fun for everyone as well.
Part one of this involves the Scarecrow Showdown. Once you enter your family, group, business, or organization, you build your Scarecrow out of any material that will withstand the weather. This could be an old football jersey, the wedding dress from that first marriage that lasted just six months, a tuxedo, Grandpa’s old overalls, without him in them please, or just about anything you have on hand. Starting October 1st, you display your Scarecrow where everyone driving by can see it. If your business or home is outside the town’s limits, that’s not a problem, the group will assign you a display spot in the town. Over the next few weeks, people can cruise through the town and check out all the Scarecrows. For businesses, churches, or civic groups, people can cast a vote for their favorite Scarecrow by donating a can of nonperishable food at the organization that has their favorite Scarecrow on display. On October 15th, the PSSC Group will collect the canned goods from those spots and tabulate the scores. All the food that’s collected will be divided amongst the Swansea area Food Banks.
For families that would like to enter a Scarecrow in the Showdown, you just get those creative juices flowing and build your Scarecrow. Then, take a photo of it and e-mail or Facebook Messenger it to the PSSC Group’s Facebook page at this link: PSSC on Facebook. Your friends and neighbors can go to the page, check out all the entries, and then vote for their favorite Scarecrow. If they’d like to donate a canned item, they can pledge to do that during the voting in your name if you’re their choice. Those pledges can be brought to the Fall Fling for collection. Once all those votes are tabulated, the winners will be announced at the First Annual Fall Fling. A downloadable and printable copy of the Scarecrow Showdown registration form is available below.
The Fall Fling will be held between 198 and 270 West 2nd Street in Swansea. It begins at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 17th and will continue until 6:00 p.m. This will be much like a block party with several food trucks, folks handing out treats, children’s games, and someone from the Swansea Branch Library reading stories. It should be a “spooktacular” good time for everyone.
