River Bluff High School Wins 2021 We the People Competition

Lexington, SC 12/20/2021 - River Bluff High School in Lexington recently was named the state high school winner of the 2021 We the People competition sponsored by the South Carolina Bar Law Related Education (LRE) Division.

The River Bluff High School team, Led by teacher Linsy Dooley, River Bluff High took home its fifth state title in the contest held virtually Dec. 9.

“The We the People competition is an invaluable experience for my students,” Dooley said. “Not only do they learn about content including the Constitution, U.S. History, American government, and foreign policy, but the skills they learn throughout the process of preparing for and competing in this event are unparalleled,”

The first runner-up was Wilson Hall High School of Sumter led by teacher coach Tom O’Hare.

“Perhaps the most important concept learned by my students is the skill of engaging in civil discourse with their fellow students during their preparations and the judges on competition day,” said Dooley. “Which will certainly make them more productive citizens today and in the future,”

The goal of the competition is to increase education of the Constitution for students in South Carolina and across the country. Each year, volunteer attorneys from throughout the state help judge the day-long simulated congressional hearing in which students "testify" before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.

Attorney volunteer Susan Hackett of Columbia has participating in judging We The People for the past five years and says it’s one of the highlights of her year.

“I love the opportunity the competition allows to interact with students on the subject of our democracy,” Hackett said. “The students work hard all semester to show their understanding of the Constitution, and it shows. I always leave the competition feeling refreshed and relieved that our democracy is in good hands with the next generation.”
