Lexington, SC 11/29/2023 — After an illustrious 44-year career in coaching, including an unparalleled 33-year tenure as the Men’s Head Soccer Coach at Irmo High School and the last 11 years at River Bluff High School, Phil Savitz has officially announced his retirement at the end of this season. Coach Savitz leaves an indelible mark on the soccer landscape in South Carolina, holding the record for the most wins by a soccer coach in the state's history with over 800 victories.
Coach Savitz's teams have consistently excelled throughout his tenure, securing numerous regional championships and a state-record 15 state championships. His impact on the sport goes beyond victories, as 24 appearances in the state finals and a legacy of 14 State Players of the Year attest to his exceptional coaching prowess. Many of his players have transitioned to successful collegiate careers, a testament to his commitment to athletic and academic excellence.
Coach Savitz has been a perennial figure in coaching accolades, earning Coach of the Year honors at regional, state, and national levels. His contributions were acknowledged when he was inducted into the SC Soccer Coaches Association’s inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2007 and the South Carolina Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2012.
Ranked nationally by USA Today and NSCAA multiple times, Coach Savitz's teams achieved national recognition, including three appearances in the top five. His squads twice won four consecutive state championships, which is unmatched in 4A by any other coach.
Beyond the field, Coach Savitz emphasized academic excellence, with his teams repeatedly receiving the NSCAA Team Academic Award for outstanding achievement in the classroom. This recognition reflects his commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes.
A graduate of the University of South Carolina with a certification in Physical Education, Savitz's journey began with two years as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina. His dedication to teaching and coaching flourished during his impactful career at Irmo High School, concluding with 11 years at River Bluff High School.
Coach Savitz is also known for his involvement with the North and South All-Star Teams and as Co-Head Coach of the South Carolina All-Stars in "The Clash of the Carolinas All-Star Game."
