Riverland Park home destroyed by fire Saturday morning in Cayce

Cayce, SC 11/20/2022 (Paul Kirby) – The City of Cayce Fire Department responded to a fire in a single-family home on Brookcliff Drive in the Riverland Park neighborhood in the City of Cayce Saturday. Even though Cayce’s Fire Department arrived quickly, they discovered that the brick home was already heavily involved in fire when they arrived.

When Cayce’s command staff set up and began managing the fire scene, they called for assistance from Lexington County’s Fire Service and the City of West Columbia Fire Department. All these departments assist each other regularly and the great working relationship they have built is important to their effectiveness on many emergencies.

At several points during the fight, flames leapt through a hole in the home’s roof. This type of ventilation is important because it allows flames and superheated air and gasses to escape the interior of the home. The escaping flames and gasses provided an impressive display of what firefighters have to deal with when they are working inside a burning building.

The fire was extinguished quickly however, despite the best efforts of all these well-trained teams, the home was so far gone on their arrival that when it was extinguished, City of Cayce Spokesperson Ashley Hunter described the home as a “Total loss.” Three people were displaced by the fire, and they are being assisted by the American Red Cross in the early stages of their recovery.

According to the City of Cayce Fire Department, there were no injuries as a result of the fire. Its cause is still under investigation.
