South Congaree, SC (06/04/2021 Paul Kirby) – The 8th Annual Run Ela Run 5K Race / Walk will take place this Saturday, June 5, 2021, in the Town of South Congaree. According to South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert, approximately six roads will be closed for the race just before it starts at 7:30 a.m.
The race will begin at the South Congaree Equestrian Arena on Oak Street as it does each year. From that point, runners will head down to Ramblin Road, out across Main Street (SC Hwy 302) and proceed down to a special marker painted on the road’s surface. This marker indicates where the collision involving an impaired driver occurred that killed four-year-old Ella Shumate in 2011.

At the marker, runners will circle back down Ramblin Road to Daniel Road. They’ll come out to Main Street, turn left toward the airport, proceed to Church Street where they will take a right and continue out toward Gaston. At the intersection of Colonial and Church where Ebenezer PH Church sits, the participants will turn left, cross back over Oak Street, continue out to Pine Street, and proceed back down to Ramblin Road. There they will turn left, continue to Sunset Drive in front of Congaree Elementary School where they will turn left and end at the Arena again.
According to Chief Shumpert, the roads should all reopen sometimes around 9:00 a.m. Detours are Platt Springs Road to the north and Fish Hatchery Road to the south.
All proceeds from this race go to the Run Ella Run Foundation in memory of Ella Shumate. They are a joint membership chapter of the National Safety Council serving the states of South Carolina and Georgia.
