Lexington, SC 05/22/2025 - The South Carolina Department of Transportation will temporarily close and detour the Calks Ferry Road bridge in Lexington County over I-20 beginning at 7 pm tonight. This closure is expected to last overnight, reopening at 7 am on Friday.
Following a detailed inspection, SCDOT found structural issues with a portion of the bridge. Tonight’s closure will allow maintenance forces to shift traffic to one side of the bridge away from the side of the bridge that needs repairs.
During the overnight closure, traffic will be detoured onto Sherwood Road to Longs Pond Road to Two Notch Road.
The bridge will reopen tomorrow morning and will remain open with traffic control measures in place until repairs begin. We expect the repairs to begin later this summer, and we will provide updates as they become available.
SCDOT asks drivers to seek alternate routes, if possible and expect delays during the closures. SCDOT asks that drivers slow down and pay attention when driving near the work zone.

I remember a similar bridge closure near my hometown a few years ago that caused quite a bit of traffic frustration. Although delays were inconvenient, knowing the repairs were necessary for safety made it easier to be patient. The detour routes helped manage the flow, but it was definitely a test of timing and planning. If you find yourself stuck waiting or needing a break during such closures, I recommend trying the Slope Game - it's a fun and simple way to pass the time while staying entertained.
