Shed fire quickly extinguished by Lexington County firefighters early Thursday afternoon

Gaston, SC 01/12/2023 (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire in the 3500 block of Fish Hatchery Road near its intersection with Wedgefield Circle just after noon Thursday. Crews responded from Gaston, South Congaree, Sharpe’s Hill, Swansea, and several other regional fire stations. Extra equipment was dispatched because in this area of Fish Hatchery Road, there are few reliable fire hydrants. This means that tanker trucks must be utilized to haul water to a fire in the event that more than the first truck’s water tank’s capacity is needed.

The first arriving crew reported that when they pulled in, they had a medium size shed that was fully involved in fire. The shed fire was also threating a mobile home that was nearby. That first crew, along with the teams on the next few trucks, were able to quickly pull their attack lines and put the fire out without any issues or complications. Most of the equipment that was still enroute was released to return to their stations because of the fast and efficient knockdown of the fire by the initial teams.

Although the shed was a total loss, the fire didn’t significantly damage anything else. No one was injured by the blaze. Most fire trucks and their crews had left the scene within one hour of the original dispatch time.
