Pelion, SC 10/27/2022 (Paul Kirby) - The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, along with a multitude of other law enforcement agencies, was searching for a suspected gunman near Lawson Road in the Fairview Community of Lexington County Thursday afternoon. Lawson Road is located to the west of US Hwy 178 (Fairview Road) between the Town of Pelion and Fairview Crossroads. This according to the department’s social media pages.
According to a spokesperson for Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, one man was shot shortly before noon. He has been taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. He is expected to recover.
The suspect was described as a white male wearing a black shirt with cutoffs. Many area residents counted what they described as more than 50 law enforcement vehicles headed in that direction to join the search after the shooting occurred.
Shortly after the shooting, area schools in Pelion were placed on lockout status as a precaution as law enforcement searched for the gunman. Pelion High School’s lockdown was ended a few moments before 2:00 p.m.
Ae 2:38 p.m., the Lexington County Sheriff's Department posted this update on their social media sites. "We have located and detained the suspected shooter. Deputies are interviewing him." They went on to say that operations in and around our active search area near Lawson Road have concluded.
The victim is expected to recover. Our work on the case continues.
