Sheriff’s Department says a SC State Trooper was injured while on a traffic stop west of Lexington Tuesday morning

Lexington, SC 09/09/2025 (Paul Kirby) – The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has said that a collision that took place early Tuesday morning seriously injured a SC State Trooper. The trooper was at a traffic stop near the 2900 block of Augusta Hwy. when he was struck by another vehicle. This is the third collision involving SC State Troopers being struck while on traffic stops in the past 3 weeks. So far, one of the troopers involved was killed and the second received minor injuries.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Master Trooper Wayne H. LaBounty was hit by a vehicle during a traffic stop in the area of Augusta Road. LaBounty was airlifted to a hospital for his injuries.
A spokesperson for Sheriff Koon said this was a multicar collision that also damaged one of their marked cruisers. The deputy in that vehicle was not injured in the crash.
At one point, all lanes of Augusta Highway were closed from Lost Branch to Calks Ferry Road. Augusta Hwy. was reported to be reopened before noon.

The LCSD has asked the Richland County Sheriff's Department Traffic Safety Unit to investigate the collision. This ensures a thorough and impartial review of what happened. RCSD will issue updates as they become available.
