Pelion, SC 10/24/2021 (Paul Kirby) – Shumpert’s IGA, the family-owned grocery store in Pelion, SC that’s been serving their community for more than 129 years, is once again going all out for Halloween. Since the businesses’ inception years ago, the Shumpert family has led the way in serving the residents of Pelion and its surrounding areas with more than just the sale of groceries and at one-point, dry goods too. Today nothing is changed. They still sell the groceries, cash payroll checks, and act as a donation collection spot for the local food pantry and youth sports teams, but they also lead the way in offering services and activities that bring the community together as one.
Melissa Shumpert Behles, a part of the fourth generation of the Shumpert family that is actively involved in the business, has planned several events that will be held next weekend in celebration of the Halloween holiday. Back for another year is their ever-popular FREE Pumpkin Decorating Contest. If this year is anything like the past, you’ll see the handywork of the area’s budding young artist come out in all shapes and sizes. Past winners have been unbelievable with some leaning toward the humorous while others toward the more gruesome side of Halloween.
The contest provides a FREE pumpkin for all entrants and the youngest of the artist are provided paints to decorate for safety’s sake. There’s also carving equipment on hand so that the older, more capable pumpkin artist can carve and hack away to their hearts content. In the end, the final products may make you howl with laughter or scream with fear depending upon the mood of the artist and your ability to interpret the end product, be it abstract or realism. Someone will be doing facepainting for the little ones and everyone is encouraged to come in their Halloween costume.
The Pumpkin Decorating Contest is scheduled for Saturday, October 30, 2021, in the parking lot of the IGA. That’s located at 861 Pine Street in the town of Pelion, SC. It is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until noon. There will be snacks and drinks provided for everyone that attends.
Later that evening, just as the sun goes down, Shumpert’s will host a Ghostbusters Movie Night. This is a bring your own chair event and everyone should dress depending on South Carolina’s fickle fall weather. Ghostbusters is an all-time family fun movie that has become a seasonal classic. There is no admission fee to this either.
Make plans now to attend the Halloween festivities in Pelion next weekend. If this year mimics years past, you ought to have a howling good time.
