Leesville, SC (06/01/2021 Paul Kirby) – A small earthquake caused the areas of Gilbert, Batesburg-Leesville, Summit, Samaria, and Fairview to shake Monday evening at 6:53 p.m. According to the USGS the quake measured about 2.6 on the Richter Scale. That agency said that the quake took place approximately 1 mile below the surface of the earth.
A quake of this size normally doesn’t cause a great deal of damage, but people did feel a sustained shaking for a short time. Social media also lit up as residents who felt the quake tried to pinpoint what it was. Some said they felt the shaking as far away as Saluda and Wagener.
Lexington County has had quakes before. In the past several years, a small quake hit in the Cayce area that caused a loud boom late at night. Police officers and others spent some time searching for the source of that sound before the USGS confirmed it was an earthquake.
