Softball tournament to be held this weekend for teen hurt in freak accident on her 13th birthday

Lexington, SC 06/22/2022 (Paul Kirby) – A softball tournament has been organized to benefit Payton Campbell. Payton is a fun-loving teen who loved to play softball and spend time with her family and friends. Earlier this year, while on a lake trip with her family to celebrate her 13th birthday, a dead tree was blown down by high winds and it struck and seriously injured Payton.

Since the day Payton was injured, she has been fighting to get her life back to some sense of normalcy. She was first flown to PRISMA Health Richland and later transferred to MUSC in Charleston. She’s had several major surgeries and still has a lot of healing to do. Payton has been using a wheelchair but is making progress in physical therapy to help her walk again. Her father Trent Campbell, who is a captain with the Lexington County Fire Service, and her mom Ashley Campbell, have been with her day in and day out. It’s been a rough ride but as a family, they’re making it through one day at a time. Of course, with all the medical attention she needs, the family’s doctors' and travel bills have been piling up. That’s why friends and family have organized and held several fundraisers for the Campbells and are now having this softball tournament and fun day on their behalf.

On Saturday, June 25, 2022, the Pray for Payton benefit will begin at 8:30 a.m. It will be held at the Gilbert Softball Complex at 405 N Broad Street, Batesburg-Leesville (Gilbert), SC. This is where Payton played softball herself before the accident.

Besides the double elimination softball tournament, there will be lots of other fun things to do. There will be inflatables, an obstacle course, a dunking booth, snow cones, and plenty of food vendors. If you don’t have a team to enter, you can sign up individually and the organizers will place you on an age-appropriate team. All you must do to register is follow this link: Pray for Payton Sign Up
