South Congaree PD obtaining warrants on woman involved in shooting last week in Congaree Gardens

South Congaree, SC 04/07/2023 (Paul Kirby) – The South Congaree Police Department is in the process of obtaining warrants against a woman that was shot and wounded last week in a case of self-defense. According to Captain Chris Garner, speaking on behalf of Police Chief Josh Shumpert, after a thorough investigation, they are charging the woman who was shot and wounded during an altercation with Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated nature.

According to Captain Garner, the department received a call regarding the shooting on Friday, March 31, 2023. This happened on Orchard Lane in the Congaree Gardens subdivision off Pine Street in the town. When police, fire, and EMS arrived on scene, they discovered that a woman had been shot and wounded by an acquaintance of hers. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of what Captain Garner described as a non-life-threatening injury.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the woman and an unnamed person had been in a verbal altercation that eventually turned physical. At some point, a firearm was produced and fired. The woman was struck at this point. The investigation revealed that during the physical portion of this altercation, the woman became so aggressive that she began to physically assault the other person involved to the point that this person feared for their own life, health, and well-being if it had continued. Garner said that she was shot to prevent her from doing any further harm to that individual she assailed.

Captain Garner said that the department would not release the woman’s identity until they had obtained warrants for her arrest. At that time, she will be taken into custody and charged.
