South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) - A group of volunteers got together Saturday morning to help make South Congaree a better place to be and show some community spirit at the same time. Working in conjunction with Palmetto Pride, the group picked up bags full of litter along the town's main thoroughfares.
Mayor Cindy Campbell said that Palmetto Pride provided the supplies for the work, but the citizen volunteers invested the sweat equity. By the time they had finished working Saturday, they had collected about 20 bags of trash and litter, some signs, pieces and parts of old boxes, and all type of interesting but casually discarded debris. Lots of it seemed to have been discard by people driving through who simply don't care. Much of the remainder flew off trucks and trailer that were heading to the landfill just up the road. Without a good tarp stretched across these loads as the law requires, that can be one of the leading contributors to the issue of litter in South Congaree.
While the volunteers worked, Corporal Young of the South Congaree Police Department moved along the street collecting the bags of litter in the back of the department’s all terrain utility vehicle. He hauled it all to a spot where it could be properly discarded. By the time the group finished, they were tired but had a sense of pride in their town and demonstrating what can be accomplished when everyone works as a team. This group really cares about what their community looks like and Saturday, the proved that with their time and hard work.
