The Cayce Department of Public Safety announces recent promotions

Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) - The Cayce Department of Public Safety recently announced some promotions within their department. These were in the Fire Service Division and were because of attrition.

Director of Public Safety Byron Snellgrove approved three promotions after a careful review of his staff, the duties and responsibilities of the positions that were open, and the candidates’ qualifications to do those jobs.

After carefully considering this, the following promotions were made.

  • Sergeant Steven Bullard was promoted to lieutenant in Fire Division

  • Corporal Thomas Brown was promoted to sergeant in Fire Division

  • Engineer Brandon Edwards was promoted to Corporal in Fire Division

The Cayce Department of Public Safety is much different than all other police and fire departments in Lexington County. The public safety concept combines both a Law Enforcement Division and a Fire Service Division under the umbrella of a Cayce Department of Public Safety.

At any given time, there are full-time career firefighters and other specially trained personnel on duty at the Cayce Fire Station. There are also police officers, investigators, and others working in more traditional law enforcement roles in the Law Enforcement  Division. When a fire or some other emergency that would traditionally be handled by the firefighters is reported, personnel from the fire station respond with the first due equipment. Then, if they are needed, some of the on-duty police officers who have been specially trained to fight fire or handle those type of emergencies meet the firefighters on the emergency scene. They don fire gear they carry in their patrol vehicles and augment the ranks of the firefighters until the emergency is under control.

Some of the law enforcement officers are also trained to drive and operate Cayce’s fire equipment. If more equipment is needed at the scene of an emergency, those officers can respond with it.

You will probably see more promotions in Cayce's Fire Division in the near future. Over the summer, Fire Division Battalion Chief Scott Hall retired, leaving that position open. As Cayce promotes to fill that position, it will most likely leave openings within the ranks allowing other employees an opportunity to advance their careers.
