The Courage Center establishes new family meeting to serve Lake Murray community

Lexington, SC 02/242021 - The Courage Center, a Lexington nonprofit providing no-cost substance use disorder recovery support services for adolescents 14 to 18 years old, emerging adults 19 to 26, and their family members, has expanded into the Lake Murray community by establishing a new family group meeting in Chapin.

Understanding the growing need within communities neighboring Lexington, The Courage Center’s geographic service expansion will begin by offering support to families in Lexington, Newberry, Richland, and Saluda Counties for whom a Chapin meeting may be most convenient.

The Courage Center’s peer-led groups provide judgement-free, stigma-free support from other families whose children are, or have been, harmfully engaged in alcohol or drug use. The groups are no-cost and the weekly Tuesday evening meetings rotate between open share, education presentations, and group counseling formats.

Beginning March 2, the Lake Murray Family Group will meet every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church located at 844 Columbia Avenue in Chapin just .6 miles from Exit 91 on I-26.

The Tuesday evening meetings will also be available by Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82270429716. Rigorous health and safety protocols will be followed for those choosing to attend in person.

“Family members often suffer significant emotional damage - as well as financial, legal, medical, and other negative consequences - as part of a loved one’s addiction experience,” explains The Courage Center Executive Director Adrienne Bellinger. “Peaceful, loving homes can become divided, conflict may become the norm, trust erodes, marriages may become strained, and communication often becomes more difficult. The Courage Center’s Lexington and Lake Murray Family Groups are a safe place where families who find themselves in this shared space can build connections and new communities of support for themselves that are so important for finding hope and healing on these difficult journeys.”
