Lexington, SC 04/08/2024 (Paul Kirby) – The Lexington County Voter Registration and Election Commission has denied an appeal filed by former councilmember and council candidate Bobby Porter in South Congaree’s Municipal Election. The original election was held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
Porter had appealed the results saying that he bumped into several citizens after the polls closed that night who told him that they could not find his name on the ballot on one of the voting machines. He said that the tally of votes on all the other machines were razor thin margins, but one machine had wide margins between him and the other candidates. He felt that this wasn’t just coincidence.
He also said 11 voters were turned away from the polls because the rolls showed that they did not have enough of their home in the town to vote there. These 11 said that had voted before in the South Congaree elections with no difficulty.
Porter filed his appeal on Wednesday following the election and the hearing was held on Thursday. He took several people with him who expressed their concerns to the commission but after they considered it, that governing body denied his appeal. “It is what it is,” Porter said over the weekend. “Everything was 100% valid, but they just felt like there wasn’t enough there to overturn the election,” Porter concluded.
