The peanuts are coming, the peanuts are coming, the peanuts are coming to Pelion in November

Pelion, SC 10/10/2021 (Paul Kirby) – Fall is a time when the weather cools off, the trees begin to lose their leaves, and apples are fresh from the orchards. Saturdays usually mean college football, and the peanuts are harvested across South Carolina. Although the peanut harvest is a huge deal statewide, for the small Lexington County Town of Pelion it’s a time for celebration!

This year marks the 40th year that the Pelion Woman’s Club and lots of volunteers gather to celebrate the delicious peanut. That celebration, the Pelion Peanut Party, is once again scheduled for mid-November and the volunteers are working extra hard this year to make sure it’s lots of fun. There will be fair type rides, arts and crafts, games, delicious food vendors, and plenty of other exciting things to see, taste, hear, and do.

One of the highlights of the Peanut Party every year is the parade. This year’s parade is scheduled for Saturday, November 13th at 11:00 a.m. As always, the parade starts at the ballfields behind the Sr. Citizens’ Center on Fort Street and ends on Lydia Street near the high school. This comes right down through the middle of the town and people line both sides of Pine Street to smile, wave, collect goodies thrown from the floats, and generally have a grand old time.

The parade is a wonderful way to get your business or organization’s message out. You can display signs, banners, and often people will walk the route handing out literature of items that remind people who you are and that you’re right here in their community to serve. There will be beauty queens, the Pelion High School Marching Panthers, JROTC cadets, politicians, old tractors, antique cars, and all the things that make a small town parade a hit.

This year, a local celebrity will be the Grand Marshall. Mrs. Shirley Sprenne was instrumental in establishing the library in Pelion and has contributed to the education of both children and adults in the area for decades. She’s been the community’s branch librarian for thirty-years and it is high time she gets to ride on the highest seat of honor during the parade.

If you’d like to be a part of the parade, simply download the application from the link below and print it. Then, mail it to The Pelion Woman’s Club at P.O. Box 536, Pelion, SC 29123. If you’d like to be part of the judging for the Best Overall Display, send a check for $10 made out to The Pelion Woman’s Club with your application.
