Pine Ridge, SC (Pal Kirby) - Judy Cooper said that you can plan to see a parade in Pine Ridge Sunday afternoon thanks to the overwhelming support people have shown for the Pine Ridge Police Department. Cooper said that she and others will continue to protest the actions of the mayor and self-appointed police commissioner Robert Wells with a car parade and petition signing event again this weekend.
Cooper said Thursday that the Town of Pine Ridge needs its police and she and other citizens believe that the only way for that department to be viable is for Mayor Robert Wells to resign. Cooper said the group also wants to see their K- 9 Rens return to patrolling the streets of the town with former Pine Ridge Police Department Lieutenant Vincent Silano. Silano was asked by Councilmember Beth Sturkie at the meeting where he resigned if the town could do anything to make him change his mind and stay. To that, Silano answered he didn't believe that there was anything that could change his mind. At this point, Silano has not been asked if he would consider returning if Mayor Wells resigned.
The Car Parade will meander its way through the Town of Pine Ridge on Sunday, Oct 25th beginning at 2:00 p.m. Cooper said that the parade participants will gather just before that time at the Pine Ridge Town Hall located at 2757 Fish Hatchery Road. According to Cooper, the parade will pull out at 2:00 p.m. sharp and return there after a trip through town. The parade route is being planned and will be completed by the time of the parade line up.
Cooper and her team have asked that everyone decorate their cars with signs showing their support of the police. She said that they want to send a clear message that the Pine Ridge Police Department is very important to them, much more important than the mayor and any other small service that town’s government provides.
Prior to the parade the petition that Cooper has written will be available for signing in the town Hall parking lot beginning at 1:00 p.m. Motorists can just drive through & sign the petition without even getting out of their car.
