The West Columbia pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle before daybreak Friday morning has died

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Friday afternoon that a man that was struck earlier in the day by a vehicle in West Columbia has died. This collision occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Alexandria Street in West Columbia. This is not far from the popular West Columbia Riverwalk.

According to Coroner Fisher, Mr. Charles D. Stone, 85, of West Columbia was in the roadway when he was struck by a motor vehicle. He was quickly provided first aid by police officers and later firefighters from the City of West Columbia before an ambulance from Lexington County arrived. He was rushed to a local trauma center, but Fisher has said he was later pronounced dead because of the injuries he received.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Stone immediately stopped at the scene and called for assistance. That driver was not injured and is cooperating with the West Columbia Police Department who is investigating.
