Lexington, SC 11/02/2021 (Paul Kirby) – This Sunday afternoon, the Town of Lexington, its government, citizens, and friends from the surrounding communities will once again gather to honor our country’s veterans with a parade. This annual event draws thousands that line the parade route, many showing some version of Ole’ Glory as they wave and cheer on those who willing offered their lives to keep our country free.
As with any parade, there will be some traffic interruptions during the appointed time that the parade is taking place. This is to be expected and the Lexington Police Department always provides ample notice to the community so that they can plan for alternate routes if they must travel through downtown Lexington during the parade. If you do get stuck in traffic, it could be a great opportunity for you to get out of your vehicle and join in saying thanks to our nation’s heroes as they pass.
According to Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green, the road closures and detours during the afternoon of Sunday, November 7, 2021, will begin at 1:00 p.m. These closures are as follows:
West Butler Street will be closed from Columbia Avenue to North Church Street, along with North Church Street and part of Meetze Street, to allow those involved in the parade to stage and prepare their floats. The police ask that you plan on arriving early if you are participating in the parade.
The Lexington County Veterans Parade will follow a route that starts on Haywood Street and turns left on West Main Street. It will then continue to South Lake Drive to Fort Street where it loops around the Lexington County Administration Building.
The best viewing of this parade will be along West Main Street through downtown Lexington with the largest crowds gathered from the parking area of Radius Church’s Lexington Campus, past the Icehouse Amphitheater & Pavilion, and the block form Church Street to Lake Drive. It ends at the Veterans’ Memorial on South Lake Drive near the Virginia Hylton Park and the Lexington Town Hall.
To prepare for the 3:00 p.m. start of the Lexington County Veterans Day Parade, West Main Street, from Columbia Avenue to North Lake Drive, along with South Lake Drive to Fort Street, will close at 2:45 p.m. All traffic will be detoured around the parade route until the event is complete. The route will be well marked with signage and officers will be directing traffic onto the detour route.
West Main Street and South Lake Drive will be reopened at approximately 4:30 p.m.
West Butler Street, from Columbia Avenue to South Church Street, will continue to stay closed until all parade floats and participants are clear from the roadway.
Attendees should arrive early to find a parking space and a good viewing spot along the parade route as this always a well-attended event. Please park in public parking areas near the event as those who park in private business parking lots take on the risk of being towed from the property at the vehicle owner’s expense.
Public parking lots include the grass parking lots on South Church Street, the Lexington Municipal Complex on Maiden Lane, the County of Lexington Administration Building, and the Lexington County Courthouse parking lots. Radius Church usually allows free parking in their lot but that is on a first come first serve basis. Bring your own folding chair and check the weather report before coming so that you can dress in an appropriate manner.
Please follow the Lexington Police Department on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
