South Congaree, SC 06/24/2022 (Paul Kirby) – The Town of South Congaree and one of its police officers was recognized this week by Keep the Midlands Beautiful for its efforts to clean up its streets and highways. According to Mayor Cindy Campbell, Executive Director Ms. Ebonee Gadson, from Keep the Midlands Beautiful was on hand at a town council meeting to recognize Officer Sharpe of the South Congaree Police Department and the Town of South Congaree for the job they are doing with litter control in South Congaree.
There were approximately 10 volunteers present at the meeting to join in receiving the award. All were pleased to congratulate Officer Sharpe for his hard work and diligence toward this effort.
In July of 2020, a new administration for the town of South Congaree was sworn in and one of the first initiatives was having a quarterly litter pickup. They referred to this effort as "Team Up to Cleanup South Congaree". When Officer Sharpe started with the South Congaree Police Department in January of 2021, he immediately volunteered to help with the quarterly litter pickups. According to Mayor Campbell, many times he labored alongside the other volunteers after he had worked the long night shift. Officer Sharpe also volunteered to complete all the necessary paperwork that led the way for the town to receive the Palmetto Pride Adopt-A-Highway sign on SC-302 or Main Street. That sign now lets motorists know that this road cleanup effort is sponsored by the Town of South Congaree.
When presenting the recognition, Ms. Gadson said, "the efforts of South Congaree have made a significant impact and are a great example of the difference that can be made when municipalities, community organizations, and citizens unite for a common goal. I hope the other municipalities follow your lead."
