South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) - The town council of the Town of South Congaree appointed town councilmember Bobby Porter to serve as its representative on the Lexington County Joint Municipal Water and Sewer Commission Tuesday night. He will replace former Lexington County Councilman Andrew “Andy” Gambrell who had served on that commission representing South Congaree since 2013. This had been the second time he’s served on that commission. Gambrell was currently the vice chairman of the board.

The town thanked Gambrell for his previous service but said Tuesday night that they were ready to head in a different direction. South Congaree has municipal water and sewer from the City of Cayce and the Joint Municipal Water & Sewer Commission all around it and some of those services come through select corridors of the town. Still, a large part of the town is not on any government water or sewer service at all.

The Lexington County Joint Water and Sewer Commission was established in 1993 when Lexington County transferred all its utility assets to them. Its mission is to provide water and sewer services to the unincorporated areas of Lexington County. They are governed by an 11-member board that includes representatives from each of the municipalities south of Lake Murray. This includes Lexington, Cayce, West Columbia, the Gilbert-Summit Rural Water District, Springdale, Batesburg-Leesville, Gaston, Pelion, Swansea, Pine Ridge, and South Congaree. The County of Lexington also holds a seat on the commission’s board.

Tuesday morning Porter said he was honored to have been chosen to replace Gambrell after so many years. “We appreciate Mr. Gambrell's decades of service to the citizens of this area, but I am excited about this new opportunity. I believe that my years of experience in construction and development will be an asset to us on that commission’s board.”
