Town of South Congaree promotes long-time officer to the position of police chief

South Congaree, SC 08/21/2024 (Paul Kirby) – At their Tuesday, August 20, 2024, Town Council meeting, the leaders of the South Congaree Town Council voted unanimously to promote acting assistant police chief and former Major Steven Jonas to the position of Chief of Police for the South Congaree Police Department. According to Interim Police Chief Mike Gordan, Chief Jonas has been employed by the South Congaree Police Department for 22 years. In total, he has almost 30 years of law enforcement experience.

“Chief Jonas was the logical choice to rebuild the department,” according to Interim Chief Mike Gordon. The department had been left decimated by departures after the beginning of 2024. Long-time Police Chief Josh Shumpert had resigned around the last municipal election and all the other officers had taken jobs with other departments or sought other employment.

According to Interim Chief Gordan, there will be an oath of office ceremony including a public meet and greet with the new Chief scheduled in the near future. Chief Gordan will work through a portion of September to help during the transition.
