Train strikes car this morning near Irmo and blocks St. Andrews crossing as well as others

Irmo, SC 04/11/2024 (Paul Kirby) – Just after 8:00 a.m. on Thursday. April 11, 2024, a disoriented driver tried to turn from Saint Andrews Road onto Leisure Lane in the Irmo area of Lexington County. The motorist missed the road and instead turned onto the railroad tracks that run parallel to the road.

A train was coming down the tracks and struck the car in the rear. The train pushed the car down the tracks about a quarter of a mile. Fortunately, there were no injuries to the driver of the car or the crew of the train. In the process, the train and the car got connected together. This closed the Saint Andrews Road railroad crossing as well as all the crossings down to Seawright.

It took crews from the Irmo Fire District, a towing company, and the train’s operator worked together to clear the tracks. They are now reopened.
