Troopers make arrest in Friday's fatal collision on Platt Springs Road

Red Bank, SC (Paul Kirby) - Troopers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol have arrested a man in connection with the fatal collision that occurred just before 6:00 p.m. on Platt Springs Road at McLee Road Friday evening. Earlier Saturday, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher had identified the victim of the collision as 73-year-old Galen Manapat of Lexington.

According to Lance Corporal Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Johnathon Ackiss was arrested on Saturday and charged with felony driving under the influence, having an open container in his vehicle, and simple possession of marijuana. He has been booked into the Lexington County Detention Center where he was awaiting a bond hearing.

Earlier in the day, Tidwell said that Ackiss was driving a Kia west toward Batesburg-Leesville when he turned left in front of Manapat who was riding a Honda east in the direction of Red Bank and White Knoll High School. Manapat, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike and died at the scene due to his injuries. Ackis was transported from the scene by an ambulance from Lexington County EMS for minor injuries received during the collision.

The collision is still being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s MAIT team.
