Lexington, SC 05/15/2023 (Paul Kirby) – Two people died in two separate single-vehicle collisions on Saturday, May 13, 2023. One occurred in the Dixiana/Gaston area of the county and the second happened just north of Lexington.
According to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the SC Highway Patrol, at 12:58 a.m. on Saturday morning, a Nissan sedan that was travelling on Gardner’s Terrace Road near Gillian’s Terrace Road dropped off the pavement on the left side, struck one culvert, then another before overturning. The driver of the vehicle was the only person in the sedan and died at the scene.
According to Coroner Margaret Fisher, the driver of that vehicle was Marvin James Gilpatrick Jr., 60, of Gaston. Fisher went on to say that Gilpatrick, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries sustained in the collision.
Master Trooper Ridgeway said the second deadly collision occurred on Windsor Park Drive off Old Cherokee Road. That collision happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday night. According to Ridgeway, this crash involved a moped. Trooper Ridgeway said that the driver of a moped ran off the side of the road, hit a culvert, then struck a tree.
Coroner Fisher has identified the moped’s rider as Roan Aiden Palmer, 17, of Lexington. Fisher said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Both of these collisions are being investigated by the SC Highway Patrol.
