Pelion, SC 06/19/2023 (Paul Kirby) – Two motorist were killed in two separate, unrelated collisions in the Pelion area of Lexington County on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18th, 2023. These two collisions occurred between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. in the evening. According to Trooper Nick Pye of the SC Highway Patrol, both crashes involved single vehicles.
Pye said the first crash occurred on Pine Street near Thor Road just west of the Town of Pelion at approximately 6:17 p.m. The one vehicle involved in this collision was a 2015 KIA SUV. There were two occupants in it at the time of the crash. One person involved was killed, and the other was transported to a local medical center with what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. Trooper Pye said that the KIA was driving east on Edmund Highway toward Columbia. When it approached Thor Road, it dropped off the left side of the road, struck a culvert, then a utility pole before coming to stop.
The second collision occurred just before 9:00 p.m. on Old Charleston Road between the runway at Lexington County’s Airport and Service Center South and Canal Drive. That vehicle was a 2009 Chevrolet sedan that was travelling north on Old Charleston Road toward Calks Ferry Road when it ran off the right side of the road, the driver lost control of the vehicle, and then overturned. That motorist was killed as a result of this crash.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has not yet released the names of the victims of either of these collisions. As soon as she does, we will update this story with those identities.
