West Columbia, SC 12/13/2021 (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Monday that two people died after they were stuck by multiple vehicles on I-26 in the westbound lanes near Exit 113 or at about Airport Boulevard early Sunday morning. She has identified the pair as Heriberto Martinez Torres, 32, of West Columbia, and Ms. Beatriz Adrianna Peña-Jose, 40, of Columbia.
According to Coroner Fisher, the two were driving on the interstate when the driver lost control and crashed into the barrier on the eastbound side of I-26. Fisher says she believes the two then exited their vehicle and attempted to walk across the westbound lanes of I-26 when they were struck by two vehicles. Both victims were pronounced dead on the scene.
The drivers of the other vehicles stopped to render aid. One of the drivers was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate this fatal crash. These deaths bring the total number of traffic fatalities in Lexington County over the last three days to five people killed.
