Lexington County, SC 03/31/2023 (Paul Kirby) – Two separate, unrelated collisions have claimed the lives of two people in southern Lexington County over the past week. According to the SC Highway Patrol, one collision occurred on March 26th, 2023, at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Fish Hatchery Road near Williams Circle. The second collision occurred on Pine Street near Josh Road in the Pelion area of the county on March 29th, 2023, at approximately 12:10 p.m. In both cases, the severely injured patients were transported to the closest Trauma Center in Columbia, but later succumbed to their injuries.

According to Lance Corporal Tyler Tidwell of the SCHP, the collision on Fish Hatchery Road occurred on the morning of March 26th and involved a single vehicle. This vehicle was a 2000 Nissan Xterra. The small SUV was travelling north on Fish Hatchery Road near Williams Circle when the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle at the time, lost control, ran off the right side of the road, struck a drainage culvert, and then came to a stop.

The second collision that happened just after noon on March 29th near Pine Street and Josh Road just west of Pelion involve a 2012 Ford and a 2017 Hyundai. According to Lance Corporal Nick Pye of the SCHP, both vehicles were sedans.

Pye said that both the Ford and the Hyundai were travelling west on Pine Street toward Wagener when one struck the other in the rear making both drivers lose control. One of the vehicles went off the left side of the road and the other went off the right. Both of these vehicles hit concrete drainage culverts. While the two people in the Ford received non-life-threatening injuries, the person who was driving the Hyundai was seriously injured. That individual was transported to the Trauma Center at Prisma’s Palmetto Richland where despite the efforts of the medical team, the injured person passed.

The SCHP is still investigating these collisions. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has not yet released the identity of either of the drivers of these vehicles who passed at the hospital from injuries obtained in these crashes.
