West Columbia, SC – 03/10/2021 (Paul Kirby) – The West Columbia Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding how the body of a female ended up in the Saluda River recently. According to Assistant Police Chief Scott Morrison of the WCPD, they recovered the person’s body from the water on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.
Chief Morrison said that someone along the river saw what they thought could be a body floating approximately 10’ or 12’ feet from the shore and called police. Once the body was removed from the water, it was turned over to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher and her staff. Morrison said that Coroner Fisher has scheduled an autopsy for Thursday and the results of that will dictate where their investigation goes from that point forward.
At this juncture, Chief Morrison said that this was an open investigation. There may be more information available later in the week.
Lexington County Coroner Fisher will be responsible for releasing the decedent’s name once it is appropriate to do so.
