West Columbia, SC 09/09/2024 (Paul Kirby) – Police officers from the West Columbia Police Department responded to a fatal vehicle collision in the 200 block of Sunset Boulevard Sunday afternoon around 4:20 p.m.. The 200 block is between Meeting Street and the Jarvis Klapman bridge both of which are in the vicinity of the House of Raeford Chicken plant.
Although the West Columbia Police Department has currently issued no details regarding this collision, there have been many vehicle versus pedestrian crashes here over the years. This is usually attributed to the large number of House of Raeford employees who park in the old shopping center on the west side of Sunset Boulevard and then cross the busy road to the east side where the Chicken Plant (House of Raeford) sits on the bank of the Congaree River.
The City of West Columbia has worked fervently to alleviate the dangers of this crossing. This includes installing warning lights and a special traffic crossing system that drivers can use to avoid their vehicles striking pedestrians. Although each of these efforts have helped, none have alleviated the issue altogether.
More specific details on this collision should be available soon. Coroner Fisher’s office is currently working with the WCPD gathering those details.
